Award Winning Dessert

On Sunday, 1st November, Manchester based Maison Breizh was awarded Best Dessert at the national finals of the British Street Food Awards 2020, donating its profits raised whilst participating in the competition to the community food organisation Eat Well Manchester. The award winning dessert “Breton Buckwheat 5 ways” demonstrated the versatility and strength of flavours from using buckwheat imported from Brittany, comprising a fermented buckwheat galette, buckwheat ice cream, buckwheat honey, a buckwheat and chocolate tuile and a buckwheat crumb. The award was judged by Head Chef of The Fat Duck, Ed Cooke, beating off strong competition from Yorkshire’s Bao Bros 23 and last year’s dessert champion London based Utter Waffle, and was presented by the UK’s leading authority on street food, journalist and entrepreneur Richard Johnson.

Owner and crêpier of Maison Breizh, Andrew Savill from Chorlton, launched the Breton food business 3 months ago, trading at weekend markets around Manchester. Last year he qualified as a crêpier at the top cookery school in St Malo and has designed his savoury and dessert menu around creating an authentic Breton food experience. Commenting on the organic gluten-free buckwheat from Brittany, “It’s very important to the business to balance regional Breton recipes by importing quality ingredients like buckwheat, butter, honey and chocolate, whilst collaborating with the best local produce suppliers from Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire for ham, egg, cheese, fruit and veg. For example the buckwheat ice cream, never done before in the UK, was a direct joint effort with Daresbury Dairies.”

Now in its 10th year, the British Street Food Awards attracts thousands of traders who enter from around the country, hundreds are then shortlisted to compete across 5 regional heats. Maison Breizh was the joint People’s Choice winner alongside Osaka Local at the Northern Heats held at Grub last month. This weekend’s live grand final event featuring the UK’s top 14 finalists competing for a variety of award categories was held outside in a market square in the centre of Reading under stringent covid regulations. “It’s been such a challenging year for anyone operating in the food and drink, hospitality and event industries, we’re doing all we can to support local businesses like Field 28, Chorlton Cheesemongers, Out of the Blue, Grub and Levenshulme Market.” Looking forward to the other side of the current lockdown you will next be able taste the fabulous Maison Breizh menu at Stretford Food Hall in December, and in the New Year at the postponed Manchester Food and Drink Festival rescheduled for Easter weekend in April.
